Food and drink

A picnic lunch should always be carried with, ideally, a back-up store of some high-energy food. Drinks are important-as always-but in the summer months temperatures can be high in the Cantal. It is most strongly recommended that the absolute minimum amount of water needed is 1.5 litres per person per daily walk (3 litres in hot weather). (Water purifying tablets should always be carried in case of water shortage).

Cattle

At the end of May, in the Cantal, (as in many mountainous areas of France), cattle are moved to high pastures (the "transhumance"). Inevitably walkers have to cross terrain on which the cattle are grazing. In most cases the Cantal cattle are inquisitive but usually not aggressive. However, sometimes bulls run with the herd, so careful observation and quick route changes may be necessary. If cows have calves with them be particularly careful. Many mountain breeds of cows (e.g. the Salers in the Cantal) have "un instinct maternal très developpè" - never come between cow and calf!
