For walkers wishing to operate from a single base the Cantal can be covered from a quite small number of starting points. For walkers with transport any of the central villages i.e. Super Lioran, St.Jacques des Blats or Mandailles/St.Julien are suitable.


Some alternative walks and starting points are detailed in the "Monts d'Auvergne - Auvergne Hills" website.

For walkers without transport the choice is more restricted to the villages above. It would be possible from any of the above villages to do 3 to 5 days walking and to cover many of the main features of the Cantal.

Les Chazes

Les Gardes

both have parking spaces but can be reached easily on foot from Hôtel des Chazes, 2km north of St.Jacques des Blats on the RN122 (see St.Jacques sketch map and Cantal Hotels listing). This makes the hotel an excellent choice for a walking base if transport is not available and is also a very good choice for a base with transport.
