Murat

Murat

Murat is a small, very attractive, town on the northern limit of the Cantal mountains, in the Alagnon valley. It announces that it is "The crossroad of the high Auvergne". It has good facilities and a good weekly market and is a useful small shopping centre. It is not particularly suitable for walking the Cantal without using a car but is a pleasant and interesting place to stay. (For hotels, see Cantal Hotels listing).

Thiézac

Thiézac

Thiézac is a biggish village, by-passed by the RN122, lower down the valley from St.Jacques. It has very good facilities and accommodation. Some good walking can be made from the village but it is slightly more remote from the major peaks and ridges of the Cantal than, for example, Mandailles or St.Jacques. (For hotels, see Cantal Hotels listing).

Le Falgoux

Le Falgoux is a small village delightfully situated in the Mars valley. It is close to Puy Mary and Puy Violent. There is excellent walking from the village but car trips are necessary to visit the other major mountains of the area. A little remote with poor general access to everything compared to some of the other villages. (For hotels, see Cantal Hotels listing).

So...where is best?

Obviously "best" is a matter of personal choice. Our own favourite is St.Jacques des Blats. For good walking without using a car, for accessibility, for sufficient basic services, for easy travel to the larger villages/towns it is an excellent centre. In addition it has five very good hotels in, or very close to, the village. The hotels are all two star and offer remarkable value for money, approximately £30 per night per person for dinner, bed and breakfast.
